With the SSD back in the MBP we again tried to install OS 10.5 from the original grey start-up disk. Eventually he managed to format the disk, I think by doing it externally with some of their kit. ![]() So, after having no luck with formatting, John then took my MBP to their workroom, where he tried two different SATA cables, to see if the cable was the problem. I'm not sure whether John set the partition to GUID or not, and again I will have to Google what that is - I'm learning a whole load of new stuff!) (Shootist007 - I was a bit nervous about doing a partition as I don't know anything about it (a bit more informed now after some research lol!) so I though I should steer clear and ask the experts. He tried to Erase the disk (as I had done), and also to do a single partition (MacOS Exetended Journaled) but no luck. I took my MBP to the Apple Store Genius Bar, and spoke to the lovely Genius John. Markwmsn and Shootist007 - thanks for your replies! :)Īfter an interesting afternoon, I've come to pretty much the same conclusions as Markwmsn, but still no clear fix. If anyone has any pointers that would be so great. I've Googled the heck out of this, and although others have been asking similar questions, I still can't make sense of it all. The new hard drive shows up, but there is no option to "Repair Disk" under First Aid (it's greyed out) and when I tried to erase and re-format the hard drive - I selected Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - it comes up with an error message: "Disk Erase failed with the error: Input/output error" There was no 'destination' to install to, so I went to Disk Utility. ![]() All seemed fine as I put it in, but when I came to install the OS, I got a bit stuck. Crucial claim this is definitely compatable. ![]() I did a bit of research, (I'm not very knowlagable about computers), and eventually chose a Crucial m4 SSD, 256GB, 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s to replace it with. Thank god I'd done a Time Machine back-up recently! After it failed to boot up past the grey screen, I took it to the Genius bar at my local Apple store, and the guy told me the hard drive had definitely died. I've just replaced the hard drive in my Mac and am having problems installing the original software (OS 10.5, Leopard).
